Land succession course offered

Are you concerned about what the future of your ranching or forested land may be? If so, “Ties to the Land,” a succession planning workshop may be for you.

Montana State University County Extension Office and Kaniksu Land Trust are teaming up with the Forest Stewardship Foundation to bring the course to the Thompson Falls Community Center on Saturday, Nov. 10, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Succession planning is the human side of estate planning and is a way for families to maintain their ties to the land across multiple generations, building awareness of the key challenges facing family businesses, and motivating families to address those challenges, according to the Extension Office.

Kirk and Madeline David will bring their years of experience to facilitate the workshop as they have done in multiple states, sharing their passion for supporting families in planning for the future of their land. Legal and economic aspects of transferring a farm, forest or ranch from one generation to the next will be discussed.

Registration is $10 per person or $20 per family and will include one “Ties to the Land” workbook and companion DVD, lunch and refreshments. The Idaho Forest Group provided a generous donation allowing the cost to remain at a minimum. Enrollment is limited to first come, first served. Contact Juli Thurston at (406) 827-6934 or email her at [email protected] to register or inquire about the course.
