The story of the Plains Horsemen's 2018 football season could have been quite a bit different with a few different circumstances along the way.
As it is, coach Eddie Fultz and his Horsemen completed the campaign on a high note with a 70-30 road win over Troy last Thursday night. Plains finishes the season with a 2-7 record.
Fultz couldn't help but to reflect on what could have been.
"Looking back on it, we didn't catch any breaks this season," he said. "We lost a few games we felt we should have won, endured a few key injuries along the way, and still, we were only a couple of games away from making the playoffs.
"We feel pretty good about how we competed," he added, "but could have been more successful if a few things had happened differently, but that's the way it went this year."
The big win over Troy to wrap up the 2018 season has to help the Horsemen as they begin to think about 2019.
"We moved up and down the field pretty well in Troy," Fultz said. "It was a nice win to finish the season up with."
Fultz said offense has not been Plains' problem over the second half of the season at least.
"We scored like 34 points or more in our last four games, we have been rolling on offense," he said. "But we haven't been too good at stopping people lately, so it was good to play well on that side in Troy."
Orion Pry-Hyde scored four touchdowns to pace the Horsemen win. Pry-Hyde, Malachi Paulsen, Jacob Peterson, Cameron Hill and Matt McCracken played their final football games for Plains in Troy.
It's all about next season now in Horsemen football land. "We have what look like a lot of winnable games, and a more favorable home schedule next year," Fultz said. "We will just have to do our off-season work to continue to improve and come out with a renewed focus when it all starts up again next season."
