Vanderwalls, Carey lead P-HS

Conrad Vanderwall and Josiah Vanderwall each won second place and Peter Carey third to pace the Plains-Hot Springs Savage Horsemen in the Bob Kinney Classic wrestling tournament in Superior Saturday.

The Savage Horsemen also hosted a quadrangular match including P-HS, Thompson Falls, Arlee and Eureka in Hot Springs Thursday, and wrestled in mixer action at Superior Friday evening before the Kinney Classic kicked off the next day.

“We are pleased with the efforts over the three days last week,” coach Jeff Kujlala said. “It was our first weekend of wrestling for the season and overall we thought the kids did really well.”

Looking like team leaders for P-HS this season, the Vanderwall brothers both advanced to the finals at their respective weights in Superior, Conrad at 132 pounds and Josiah at 138.

Conard won his quarterfinal match by pin and then decisioned Wesley Buchanan of Columbia Falls 11-8 in the semis to land in the 132 title match, where he lost a 5-0 decision to Libby’s Zack Morrison in the chipper.

Josiah won his way into the 138 finals with three straight pin wins but was pinned by Dakota Flannery of Whitefish in 3:42 of the championship match.

Carey pinned his way to third at 120 pounds after falling in the quarterfinals, pinning Kieren Rooney of Cut Bank in 3:48 in the conso final to claim his third place medal.

Taylor Angle (103 pounds), Kenzie Angle (138), Bert DeTienne (145), Jesse Uski (160) and heavyweight Stephen Yoder also wrestled and, according to Kujala wrestled well, not just in Superior Saturday but during all three days of mat action last week.

Plains-Hot Springs grapplers will compete in a quadrangular match at Arlee Thursday this week.
