The Noxon Lady Red Devils are very young and inexperienced but getting better every time they step on the floor.
Coach Ryan Weltz and his precocious Devils took two more learning steps last week, falling 61-22 to District 14C-leading Arlee in Arlee Friday, before returning home and being outlasted 36-29 by the visiting Hot Springs Savage Heat Saturday.
The Devils will complete regular season play hosting Plains Friday.
“We are a young team that is kind of learning about playing in game situations as we go,” Weltz said. “We are playing hard, it is just kind of hard to get over the learning curve at this point.”
Noxon could never quite gain its footing in the game with the powerful Scarlets in Arlee’s gym. “That place has an atmosphere to it and we had trouble adjusting,” Weltz said, “but those kind of games are part of the process. You have to play through them, gain some experience and look forward to playing better the next time you meet.”
Senior Delaney Weltz and eighth grader Avery Burgess led the Devils in Arlee with six points apiece, Kali Murray scored three, Chelsea Vohs, Rachel Ehinger and Vanessa Horner added two apiece and Emily Brown one.
Alyssia Vanderburg led Arlee with 17 points, Nellie Desjarlais scored 11 and Louetta Conko-Camel 10.
The Lady Devils held their own in the Hot Springs game. “We played hard, were right with them most of the way,” Weltz said, “and gave ourselves a shot at winning. We just couldn’t get some shots down at key times.”
Delaney Weltz again led Noxon in scoring with 14 points (including a couple of 3-pointers), Vohs added seven, Burgess four and Vohs and Brown two apiece.
