County gridders invited to 6-Man All-Star game

The high school football careers of Tyler Carr and Tyler Knudsen of Hot Springs and Levi Brubaker of Noxon are not quite over, they have one more game to play, this time as teammates for the Blue squad in the 23rd Annual 6-Man All-Star Football Game at 7 p.m. in Custer June 1.

Another senior baller from Sanders County, Edison VanVleet of Noxon, has been chosen as an alternate for the Blue team in the all-star game, which pits players from the Western C and Eastern C 6-Man ranks on the Blue team against all-stars from the Northern and Southern 6-Man teams on the Red team.

As of Tuesday, it was still not yet known if VanVleet would suit up for the Blue team. If selected athletes cannot play in the game for some reason, additional players can be drawn from the alternate list, and VanVleet is still hoping for that call.

Each school that has players selected for the 6-Man All-Star game is responsible for raising funds to offset the cost of the event. To help Brubaker, and possibly VanVleet if he is eventually named to the team, potential donors are asked to contact Noxon football coach Bart Haflich, either by email ([email protected]) or by phone ((406)-847-2442, ext. 302).

Advertisement spaces in the 6-Man All-Star game program are available for purchase, and funds raised through the selling of these ads are also used to defray expenses for the players. These ads are available for businesses or well-wishers and are $25 for an eighth of a page, $50 for a quarter-page, $100 for a half-page and $200 for a full page. Haflich is also the contact for the advertisement spaces from the Noxon area in the game program.

Hot Springs Savage Heat coach Jim Lawson, who has coached in this all-star game before, will join the Blue coaching staff as an assistant for this year’s 6-Man all-star contest. Lawson said each player is responsible for raising money but that he would help facilitate the process for those wishing to donate, or purchase an advertisement. He urges prospective donors to leave a message for him at the Hot Springs High School office ((406)-741-2962).

A veteran of these all-star games after guiding the Heat to two State C titles and several other appearances in the State C 6-Man playoffs, Lawson has twice been named the head coach and twice as an assistant for the 6-Man classic. Lawson also served as an assistant coach for the Shrine Game, which involves players from all levels of Montana high school football, following Hot Springs’ 2012 State C championship season.

This year’s Blue team will be guided by Wibaux coach Craig Lunde, who led the Longhorns to the 6-Man championship, defeating Jordan 70-27 in the title game. Grass Range-Winnett head coach TJ Smith will guide the Red team.

Hot Springs and Noxon both qualified for the State C 6-Man playoffs last fall.
