Red Devils ready for action

Already a week behind the curve thanks to the weather, coach Matt Havens and his Noxon track and field team is scheduled to compete in the Eureka Invitational in Lincoln County April 6.

Originally slated to open the season at the Jim Johnson Memorial meet in Frenchtown this Friday, the Red Devil thinclads will instead start the season in Eureka as the Johnson meet has officially been canceled due to Montana’s late but great flurry of winter weather.

Havens said seniors Levi Brubaker, Edison VanVleet and Delaney Weltz, and junior Rylan Weltz look to be Noxon’s team leaders this spring. “We will be looking for greatness out of these kids at practice and at meets,” Havens said.

Brubaker enjoyed a breakout spring in 2018, claiming District 14C, Western C and State C titles in the triple jump, and claiming fifth place points in the long jump in the State C meet. His winning triple jump of 44 feet, 3 inches at the State C set a new Noxon High School record in the event.

Hoping to match the steady improvement he showed in the event throughout the season last spring, Brubaker will be aiming for the State C record of 45-7 in the triple jump this season. Brubaker also runs the sprints for the Red Devils.

The Weltz siblings are both proven commodities in the throwing events (the javelin, shot put and discus) and VanVleet specializes in the hurdles and middle distance runs.

The other members of the 2019 Red Devil track and field squad are Riley Richter, Ariana Wood, Wyatt Lackner, Michael Antonich, Elizabeth Lampshire, Shane Reishus, Gabby Stough, Avery Vogel, Angel Hammell, Josh Baldwin, Jared Webley, Cade VanVleet, Sarah Clements, Jaedyn Murray, Andy Koonce and Nate Cano.
