Top 10, Top 8 talent abounds in Sanders County schools

There is a lot of Top Ten and Top 8 talent in our local Sanders County high schools.

Tuesday was Top 10 and Top 8 meet days in western Montana and a slew of county athletes were either on their way to Missoula for the Top 10 meet or to Eureka for the Top 8.

The Top 10 and Top 8 meets are mid-season events designed to bring the best athletes from all MHSA classifications together for a friendly mid-season meet. Qualification for these meets is based on performances so far this season, and bring kids together from all corners of Montana, from the small towns to the large cities.

The leading triple jumper in Montana in the Class C ranks this season (with a best mark so far of 43 feet, 7 inches) and the defending State C champ in the event, Noxon senior Levi Brubaker was set to head to Missoula Tuesday for the Top 10 meet while several other Red Devil runners and throwers will be going to Eureka for the Top 8 event.

Rylan Weltz, Elizabeth Lampshire, Riley Richter, Ariana Wood and Nate Cano are the Red Devil runners and throwers who were to be heading to Eureka with coach Matt Havens. Lady Red Devil senior Delaney Weltz, who has posted marks more than good enough to qualify for the meet, was reportedly unable to attend due to another commitment.

Coach Trenna Ferris was to have taken most of her team to the Top 8 event in Eureka.

Included in that list are Lady Hawks Elli Pardee, McKenzie Robin, Megan Baxter, Sierra Hanks, Josey Neesvig, Gabi Pallister, Trinity Godfrey, Maya Stiles, Kacey VanZanten and Anna Stover, and Hawk boys Lance Palmer, Cody Burk, Roman Sparks, Ben Beauchman, Trey Fisher, Cameron Lee, Isaac Buetow, Nick Viera, Justin Morgan and Cooper Cable.

Plains athletic director Mike Cole indicated that coach Denise Montgomery planned on taking the entire Plains contingent to Eureka for the Top 8 meet.

Hot Springs coach Bethany White said none of her athletes qualified for the Top 10 and that she was still waiting to find out who qualified for the Top 8 as of Monday.
