Dog days of summer at TF park

Dogs will have their day in Thompson Falls on Sat., June 29, beginning with an organized dog walk at the high school track, followed by a four-hour “Canine Carnival” just up the hill at Thompson Falls Dog Park.

Organized by Sanders County Dog Training Club (SCDTC), the festivities begin at 9 a.m. with a “Canine Fitness Walk.” Leashed dogs and owners are invited to congregate at Thompson Falls High School track for a casual stroll, walk, or jog. There is no cost for the event, which is open to the public. Every dog that makes at least one lap around the track will receive a coupon for a free prize, which can be redeemed at the Canine Carnival starting at 10 a.m. at Thompson Falls Dog Park.

Carol Searl, organizer of the walking event, said this will be the first of several organized community dog walks this year.

“SCDTC is now officially registered as an American Kennel Club ‘Canine Fit Club.’ Dog walkers can log in their miles and get recognition from AKC for achieving milestones.”

From the high school track, dog walkers can move on up to Thompson Falls Dog Park, 410 Golf Street, where the “Canine Carnival” kicks off at 10 a.m. The park will be divided into activity areas where everyone can try different dog sports, including agility, rally, dog dancing and trick training. Trainers from SCDTC will be on hand to supervise and assist. Dogs will receive award certificates and prizes for trying each activity.

The carnival will also feature vendors offering dog toys, dog nutrition supplements, and essential oils for dogs.

Both the Community Dog Walk and Canine Carnival are open to the public. All activities are free of charge.

“It’s our opportunity to showcase the dog park, including the new ‘small dog’ addition,” said Jan Manning, dog park coordinator. The new addition is adjacent to the original and offers a 100-foot by 50-foot play area just for small dogs. Fencing was installed earlier this spring, completely funded by the club through donations and fundraising events.

“We’re very proud of our contribution to the community,” Manning adds, “and are eager to share it with everyone.”
