Elections are just around the corner
So begins another political season. Democratic presidential hopefuls have been at it for months with debates and commercials and campaign materials. And there is still no clear front runner. Now, the filing period is open for state and local elections.
This year, Sanders County voters will get to decide local races including clerk of district court, a county commissioner and a district judge position. There are open seats for the state house and senate and for Congress. And of course, there's the ever-present presidential election.
Over the next several months, we'll see myriad claims and slogans, as well as the usual accusations and criticisms of opponents. Our hope is that this season, candidates will focus on their own strengths and what they can do for their constituents, instead of focusing on the weaknesses of the opponents. Wouldn't it be something if we had an election season that was full of positivity and enthusiasm for our country?
It's probably a stretch to hope that those campaigning will keep it clean and positive. But for voters, we hope that you'll do your part to educate yourself on issues and candidates. It's a great privilege to be able to elect our leaders. It's our duty to make sure our decisions are informed and with purpose.
