No doubt the new solid waste station east of Thompson Falls is top notch, but there seems to be some confusion on procedures and protocol when it comes to dumping waste. Although signs are located throughout the facility, knowing exactly where to go and what to do is a mystery to some.
According to Jason Peterson, Solid Waste District Supervisor, and station attendants, it is not necessary nor required to check in with an attendant when visiting. Unless there is a problem, a full bin, or there is a question, people can go ahead and throw their waste into the properly labeled bins.
Upon entering the facility, a recycle container is available for aluminum cans. Following along, behind the recycle station are receptable bases labeled: Household Trash (no furniture, metal, etc.), Construction & Demolition materials (this is a pay as you throw container, so you must contact an attendant if utilizing this station), Wood Waste (no painted wood, leaves or other yard debris) and Metal Only. Determine what materials you have to discard and use the designated receptable for these items.
In addition to these locations, a three-bay garage is on site that is used only by solid waste station personnel as a storage facility for trash when receptables become full. The contents of the full bin are dumped and stored in the garage while waiting to be collected and removed from the facility. Attendants commented that signs placed in front of the garage prohibiting public entrance are being overlooked. For safety, they ask for extra caution in not entering those prohibited areas.
Suggestions were made that sorting garbage prior to arriving at the waste facility will help expedite the process. Following the signs and throwing proper items in their designated receptacles will help ensure the waste is properly handled. If there are any questions as to where to dispose of certain items there is always an attendant available, so they encourage you to ask. Otherwise, follow the signs and toss accordingly.
