If you are playing the Plains Horsemen lately, do not ask for whom the bell tolls, the bell tolls for thee.
Although a Hemingway quote may seem an odd basketball analogy to make, the Horsemen have been writing a book lately about different ways to win basketball games.
Last week, it was a little bit of offense mixed in with a lot of defense that produced two more Plains wins as the Horsemen downed the Two Eagle River Eagles 70-43 in Plains Thursday before traveling down to Noxon Friday and stopping the Devils 59-18.
Coach Tyrel Allen and his Horsemen improved to 9-2 overall and 5-0 in 14C play with their two wins last week. The Horsemen host 14C rival Charlo Thursday before heading to Troy for a non-conference game there Saturday.
“We have played all five other teams in the conference now and I want to see us continue to get better in the second half of the season,” Allen said. “I noticed last year that the teams that were playing better, the ones that were improving, ended up doing the best at tournament.
“And I want us to be one of those teams getting better late this year.”
Plains’ win over Two Eagle was paced by the double figure scoring of four Horsemen, with Jake Weyers throwing down a season-high 17 points, Kade Pardee adding 15, Treydon Brouillette 14 and Parker Flock 12.
Tristan Subatch, Jeremiah Allen, Duncan Chisholm, Nathan Feliska, Esvin Reyes and Tucker Foster added two points apiece as every Horsemen broke into the scoring column against Two Eagle.
In Noxon, Allen decided to concentrate his team’s defensive efforts on the Devils’ high-scoring Rylan Weltz, and the plan worked like a charm.
“We put Kade on Rylan full court, made it hard for him to get the ball,” Allen said.
Brouillette pumped in 20 points to lead the Horsemen in the West End, Feliska scored 16, Pardee 11, Jeremiah Allen four, and Chisholm, Reyes, Foster and Weyer added two apiece.
