Be open-minded, but have opinions
"The truth is in the middle... progress is in the middle." Actor Harrison Ford made this comment on a recent episode of "CBS Sunday Morning" when talking about why he decided to start speaking up about politics.
We want people to have opinions. That's where change happens. When people start speaking their minds, things can get better. Technology, education, transportation and other types of infrastructure have improved throughout the ages when someone has had an idea or thought of a way to do something different. Sometimes things don't work out, but even failures lead to lessons learned.
When it comes to politics, everyone has an opinion. If you think someone doesn't, it's just because they choose to stay quiet and not get involved in discussions. Where we see a problem is when people are so narrow minded that they lose sight of the bigger picture. It's important to have opinions and to express concerns or ideas, but to not understand that there's always another side or point of view is damaging to everyone and doesn't move anyone forward.
Being able to compromise, to learn from each other and meet in the middle, is where progress happens. You don't have to change someone's mind, just be able to work together for the greater good.
