HOT SPRINGS – Volleyball warfare, District 14C style.
Complete with hard-hit, well-placed shots flying from both sides of the net, the Hot Springs Savage Heat faced off with the Charlo Lady Vikings in Hot Springs last Thursday in a heated battle for conference net supremacy.
Finding a few more howitzers in their arsenal at crucial junctures in the match, the powerful Lady Vikings won this particular battle 25-20, 25-19, 29-27 and now assume control of the regular season conference race.
After struggling through the first two sets, the Heat found their rhythm in the third. Behind the effective serving of Katelyn Christensen, who won four straight points, the Heat built a lead of 21-15.
Several points later, Lily Winn blocked a Charlo kill attempt to put Hot Springs ahead 24-18 and it looked like the Heat would win the set.
Charlo's Kassidi Cox halted the Heat's run by winning the next five points off her serve, including two aces to tie things up at 24-24.
The 14C powers went back-and-forth, toe-to-toe after that until Molly Kate Sullivan finally blocked a shot for Charlo to give the Vikings the game 29-27, and the match three sets to none.
Although the Vikings eventually won out in the end, Hot Springs coach Alisha Pablo was happy with how her team played. "I am very proud of the girls' performance," she said. "They played well and left lots of room for improvement, which is always exciting this time of year, because it means we still have parts of our game to work on to get top notch before tournament time."
In other net action last week, the Savage Heat took down the Trotters 25-9, 25-11, 23-25, 25-17 in Plains last Tuesday, Sept. 29.
Savannah Roosma powered the Heat to that win with 10 aces and five blocks, Lizzy Fisher was good for nine assists and four digs, and Christensen crushed seven kills and added four digs.
Madison Elliott had four kills and a block to lead Plains, Dacia Black had four digs and two aces, Piper Bergstrom added six assists and a block, Lexa Craft four digs and Kaylah Standeford two aces.
