Savage Heat to host Bridger

Coach Lawson says defense is vital to success in playoffs

Known for high-scoring games with lots of offense, Montana 6-Man football is still a game usually decided by which team has the better defense.

Hoping his Savage Heat have the correct mix of offense and defense, coach Jim Lawson and his 3-1 team, as the No. 2 seed out of the west, will host the 5-1 Bridger Scouts, the No. 2 team out of the south. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. Saturday in the Spa City.

“I often think that holding a team to 20 or 25 points is a good defensive effort in the 6-Man game,” Lawson said. “If you are able to do that, you are going to win most of the time.”

Since the Scouts won the last time they played in high-scoring fashion – defeating Custer-Hysham 56-0 October 15 – slowing down Bridger could prove to be challenging.

“Bridger has some good athletes and some big kids,” Lawson said. “They have a strong-armed quarterback and they like to throw the ball a lot. We will have to play solid defense, concentrate on making each tackle, and give ourselves an opportunities on the other side of the ball.”

Lawson said that his boys have recovered well from their two games in three days played two weeks ago. “We are in pretty good shape,” he said. “No injuries, rested up and ready to go.”

If Hot Springs wins Saturday, the Heat will advance into the quarterfinals where they will play the winner between Big Sandy and Wibaux.
