Hawks aim for big finish

Building towards a big finish in the upcoming post season tournaments, Thompson Falls Blue Hawk wrestlers stayed busy last week, grappling in a mixer along with Bigfork and Arlee in Bigfork last Tuesday, and hosting dual matches with Jefferson County and Clark Fork Saturday.

Hawk coach Mike Thilmony said no team scores were kept in Bigfork. Hindered by a lack of a full lineup, Thompson Falls lost both duals Saturday with Jefferson County and Clark Fork, but Thilmony was happy with how his grapplers performed nonetheless.

Thilmony said Saturday’s action was a tale of two duals. “We matched up pretty well with Jefferson County and ended up going 5-2 in matches actually wrestled with them,” he said. “On the other hand, we didn’t match up that well with Clark Fork.”

In the match with Jefferson County, or Boulder, Trae Thilmony (132), Owen Fernstrum (152), Max Hannum (160) and Dane Chojnacky (182) all won their matches by pin and Elijah Ratliff (145) by technical fall.

Westin Brown (126) and Walker Morefield (138) also wrestled well but fell against Boulder.

Results from the Clark Fork dual were not available.

In mixer action at Bigfork, Chojnacky won two important matches for seeding into the Western B-C divisional meet, Trae Thilmony won another match by pin, Ratliff scored a big 9-5 win over Bigfork’s Shelton Woll, and Hannum pinned Bigfork’s Archie Brevick.

Coach Thilmony is guiding his grapplers to a big finish with the Western B-C set for February 26-27 in Cut Bank and the State B-C in Shelby March 5-6.

The Hawks will compete in two more triangular dual matches this week, at Townsend Friday along with Whitehall, and at Cascade Saturday along with Fort Benton.

Improving seeding position for all his wrestlers is coach Thilmony’s main focus right now.

“We want each kid to be in the best possible position, to have their best chance of success in the tournaments,” he said. “Head to head meetings with other wrestlers in the division are critical for seeding, and that is what we are concentrating on.”
