Independently owned since 1905
The Plains and Paradise Senior Center was challenged by COVID-19 this last year to continue serving the senior citizens of Sanders County. Despite these challenges, home delivered meals continued without interruption. According to the center, sit-down meals were discontinued but grab-and-go meals were implemented. Income is down considerably, while expenses remain approximately the same.
The Plains Paradise Senior Center is asking for the community’s help. Last year they discovered the air conditioner needed to be replaced and the cost will be $12,400. According to Ray Brown with the Sanders County Community Development Corporation (SCCDC), the center has other building repairs to deal with as well, bringing that total bill up to almost $20,000. Brown said that “everybody in the community uses that facility,” explaining that not only does it see a lot of use, wear and tear, but it is also central and important to the people of the area. According to the center, they are the focal point for senior activities and a host of other happenings. The building is currently being used for Bingo (open only to members and their guests), Bunco, Mavericks Square Dancers, Back Country Horsemen, commodities distribution, private parties and other community events. Without an air conditioner, the income from those activities and hall rentals will be considerably reduced.
Since COVID-19 has stopped normal fundraising events, the senior center is looking to the community for support. Brown believes this will be a good opportunity to “crowdsource” for help. The center, in conjunction with the SCCDC, plans to start reaching out on February 18 with numerous fundraising opportunities, including sending out mailers to residents within the community it serves.
The center asks that Plains and Paradise residents keep a lookout in their mailboxes for opportunities to donate. However, they say that anyone can give at any time. The center has a GoFundMe called the “Plains Senior Center Rehab.” This page is linked through the center’s Facebook page, as well as through the SCCDC’s Facebook page. If interested parties have any questions, they are asked to call one of the Plains Paradise Senior Center Board of Directors: President Sherryl Wachob, 826-3748; Vice President Nita Dyches, (406) 203-7867; or Linda Bursell, secretary/treasurer, 826-3564. Brown can also be reached by email at [email protected], or at (406) 370-8932.
The Plains Paradise Senior Citizens Center is a 501(c)3 organization, so all donations are tax deductible. Their mailing address is P.O. Box 935, Plains, MT 59859.
