Fire destroys TF park structure

Thompson Falls Police Department (TFPD) officers are investigating a fire last week that destroyed the pavilion at NorthWestern Energy's Power Park in Thompson Falls. The pavilion burned early in the morning of August 20. The pavilion was a popular event location for gatherings like the Chicken Jamboree, the American Radio Relay League Field Day and many more. According to Thompson Falls Police Chief Chris Nichols, the fire resulted in the destruction of the pavilion and restrooms. TFPD is working under the assessment that the fire was not an accident. "We feel it's man-made," said Nichols.

TFPD is working with a Montana State Division of Criminal Investigations (DCI) deputy fire marshal. Nichols said they believe the pavilion fire to be connected to another fire in a bathroom on the powerhouse loop trail that may have happened on the same night. According to Nichols, they are unable to comment on whether these two fires are related to one reported along Thompson River Road the same night. Nichols said the fire is still under investigation, and more information would be released when available.

Brandy Powers, a spokesperson for NorthWestern Energy, said that their hearts go out to the community as they know how much use the park gets throughout the year. NorthWestern Energy owns and operates the park, as well as the dam near which the second fire occurred. Powers said NorthWestern Energy is "cooperating with the fire investigation and vows to work with the community in an effort to rebuild. We want to make sure it fulfills the community's vision as well as ours."
