Future generations
I'm always amazed at the efforts that go in to the Sanders County Fair for our local 4-H members. I had the privilege of judging some of the entries this year with my mom. The creativity, the drive and the passion that we see in these kids is inspiring.
Some of them raise animals, which is a big commitment and investment of their time and resources. They work with their livestock and learn budgeting and time management while caring for something other than themselves. It's a little sad when you see the kids showing their animals for the last time at the market auction, but in the end they are rewarded for all their hard work.
There were fewer animals in the fair this year, and one 4-H member said they only have five members in their club. 4-H has changed, adding different projects to keep up with technology and the changing needs of this generation. Change is inevitable, but the values that the organization teaches and the work ethic the kids learn have not changed. 4-H is a valuable part of their development and the development of rural Montana.
4-H members learn communication and how to work together to complete projects. They learn to ask for help and look to leaders for guidance. There are so many opportunities for kids to be involved in their communities. There are opportunities for adults as well; as leaders, judges or volunteers. Programs such as 4-H need our support to ensure future generations have the opportunity to learn these valuable lessons. — Annie Wooden
