The Red Devils went on the road and brought home their first win of the season last week, besting the Refiners at Sunburst 32-15.
“It’s always nice to get a win,” said Noxon Coach Bart Haflich. “We played better on defense. Hopefully we keep improving on both sides of the ball.”
Seniors Cade VanVleet and Treven Monagen scored two touchdowns each for the Red Devils, with VanVleet scoring on a 10-yard run in the first quarter and a 9-yard run in the third. Monagen connected on a 7-yard reception from quarterback Derreck Christensen in the second quarter and ran the ball in four yards for a touchdown in the fourth. “Treven ran the ball well on offense,” Haflich said. Quarterback Nathan Cano connected with Shamus Wheeldon, a sophomore, in the third for another Red Devil touchdown.
The Refiners made it an 11-point game with less than five minutes to go in the game, but Noxon was able to add to the scoreboard with the final touchdown in the last minute of the game. “North Star has some great athletes and our defense was able to help stop them,” Haflich added.
Sunburst’s Cade Hanson threw a 43-yard pass to Connor Sullivan to put points on the board and Hansen also ran in to score the Refiners’ other touchdown of the evening.
Haflich said he looks for his team to keep improving, taking advantage of a bye week this week before their next scheduled game September 25, when the Red Devils are set to travel to Gardiner.
