Runners have cold start to 2022

Many people started 2022 with a lazy Saturday morning. About 20 people braved the below-freezing temperatures for the annual New Year's Day Fun Run in Thompson Falls, sponsored by the Clark Fork Valley Running Club.

Sarah Naegeli has been helping organize the run for 23 years. She said many people have been there most years, but she is the only one who has made it every year.

The runners started the 2K and 5K courses in 12 degree temperatures, but the sun peeked over Eddy Peak as they started crossing the finish line. Jodi and Shawn Morgan were the first to cross the finish line, completing the 2K course in 17 minutes, 3 seconds. They joked that they beat their son Justin Morgan, who finished in 18:28. Justin ran the 5K course, however.

Other competitors braving the cold New Year's weather included Matt Sawyer, Daniel Howell, Ben Scherzer, Faith Palmer, Sania Scherzer, Rebecka Sawyer, Katherine Maudrone, Sierra Lilly, Haley Morgan, Naegeli, Sarah Stover, Floyd and Carol Searl, Marlaina Mohr and Roni and Paula Hanks.

Naegeli said she, Lilly, Stover and Haley Morgan also ran through Thompson Falls just before midnight. They said it was warmer during the night than on New Year's Day.
