Local wrestlers compete in Montana Open

Several local wrestlers competed in the Montana Open last weekend in Billings.

Lilly MacDonald, a junior from Plains High School who finished second at state last month, earned second place at the Open, winning one and losing one.

David Schulze, a Plains senior who won his bracket at state last year, finished second in the 145-pound bracket for boys 18 and under. Schulze won his first match with a 15-0 technical fall, then lost an 8-3 decision. He wrestled back in the consolation bracket, with a pin and two wins by decision before challenging Raiden Whitmore of the Upper Valley Aces club for second place. Schulze won that match 5-2.

Plains-Hot Springs assistant coach Cal Courville wrestled in the open classes, winning his first match at 160 pounds in an 8-4 decision. Courville then fell in 55 seconds to Colstrip’s Ty Bradley before being eliminated from the tournament in the consolation bracket. Will James Courville, another Plains-Hot Springs wrestler this season, also wrestled at 145, taking sixth place. Courville went 2-2 in matches at the Open.

Jacob Schulze, a junior from Plains, wrestled at 132, going 1-2 and winning his first match by pin in the first period.
