Trotters win home golf meet

The Plains girls’ golf team won at their home course last week, shooting 488 as a team and placing three girls in the top 10. Lexa Craft was fourth with a score of 109, Grace Horton placed fifth with a score of 111 and Genna Deschamps was 10th with a score of 130. Ellie Baxter, the only girl on the Thompson Falls team, took second with a score of 96. The Plains boys came in third behind Thompson Falls by only four strokes, 447 to 443. Brandt Snead led the Plains boys with a low score of 97 which was good enough for sixth place, Cael Thilmony and Nick Tessier of Thompson Falls were close behind, placing ninth and tenth with scores of 101 and 102, respectively.

“Our tournament went well,” said Lisa Brown, the Plains coach. “We are taking four boys and three girls to the divisional tournament. Lexa Craft, Grace Horton, Genna Deschamps, Brandt Snead, Drew Carey, Will Tatum and Wyatt Butcher. We will have to play our best golf to qualify for the state tournament. We have been improving every week so hopefully that continues into divisional.”

Thompson Falls coach Doree Thilmony explained how the golfers qualify for the state tournament. “They take the top four teams from our division and the top 15 compete individually. Ellie Baxter is steady with an average score hovering in the low to mid 90s. Cael [Thilmony] is on the verge of breaking 100. Colton [Wormwood] is also ranging from the 105-115 range. Nick [Tessier] broke into the 100s at Plains with a 102. And Lucas [Allday] is improving as well. We do not have a girls team competing at divisionals, but I look for Ellie to make a strong showing.”

Both Plains and Thompson Falls are young teams, but the teams are steadily improving and they are enjoying the game. At a recent practice in Plains, I asked Genna Deschamps why she liked golf. “It’s fun, leisurely, you get to meet people in a not so competitive way.”

The divisional tournament will be held in Fairmont this week.
