A Thompson Falls High School student was recognized last week with a state award. Kaden Cox received the "Yes I Can" award and was honored at halftime of the Blue Hawks' district tournament play-in game Tuesday against Troy.
The Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) awards the Yes I Can yearly to recognize youth with exceptionalities who have demonstrated their determination and achievements in multiple ways. Cox was recognized by the state of Montana, but was unable to attend the state ceremony this week as he will be traveling with the Blue Hawks to the divisional basketball tournament. CEC recognizes six students each year in the categories of academics, arts, school and community activities, self-advocacy, technology and transition (independent living, work or vocational training). After the award was announced, Cox's teammates met him at center court to congratulate him.
Two teachers wrote letters of endorsement for Cox. "Kaden is beloved by his teammates for his positive, encouraging attitude toward the rest of his teammates and coaches," teacher and basketball coach Jake Mickelson wrote. "Kaden works hard in practice and is not afraid to try new things. The confidence I have seen grow in him in his two short years at the high school has been tremendous." Teacher and coach Bill McGuire also wrote a letter in support of Cox, saying his daily attendance was spectacular and that Cox is a leader in class. "I am very proud of Kaden for his leadership within the classes by example, rather than words. His peers have a deep respect for him that shows in their communication with him."
Last year, Thompson Falls student Tianna Goatley received a Yes I Can award.
