The top 10 athletes in each event earned a spot to compete in the Russ Plicher Top 10 meet in Missoula last Tuesday. There were 35 schools represented throughout western Montana.
Blue Hawk Senior Ellie Baxter earned eighth place in the 3,200 meter in a time of 11:56.75 and a personal best. Baxter is a double contender, also participating in golf this season.
Plains Trotter Alexis Deming won third place in the discus with a throw of 108 feet, 4 inches. Deming also placed 10th in the shot put with a throw of 31 feet, 4 inches. As a sophomore, Deming isn't even halfway through her high school athletic career.
Noxon senior Emily Brown placed fourth in the 400 meters with a time of 1:00.52 and a personal best. Brown also grabbed a seventh place finish in the javelin with a 113 foot, 3 inch throw.
This was Brown's first year participating in the Top 10 competition. She said it's been tough. Noxon doesn't have a throwing coach so Brown has learned from watching other athletes and from Youtube. Brown said that the javelin is a release from the arduous running events. "It's hard to push myself," said Brown, adding that being at the Top 10 meet, "was cool, the higher competition pushed me."
Brown said that her goal for state is to, "get my own medal! Placing fourth in state in the 400 meter relay was so much fun."
One thing that Brown has learned is that, "Your best is always good enough."
