Hawks learn hoop skills

Eighty kids from grades K-8 enjoyed a week long Blue Hawk Basketball Summer Camp at the high school last week. Varsity men's basketball Coach Jake Mickelson led the camp along with his wife Lisa Mickelson, who teaches music at the elementary school and junior high. Mickelson said that he couldn't have done it without the high school students who pitched in to help. "It was good for them and they got a glimpse of what it is like to be a coach," he said.

Blue Hawk high school students and recent graduates who jumped in to help out were: Ellie Baxter, Braxton Dorscher, Blake Shusterman, Bryson LeCoure, Nick Tessier, Kaiden Robins, Braedon Ferris, Solveig Nygaard, Justin Haagenson and alumni Megan Baxter, who now plays at Carroll College.

Teamwork, dribbling, shooting and rebounding were just some of the skills the young basketball players learned. Besides having loads of fun the kids got to participate in the Camp Specials: the free throw shooting champ, hot shot champ, knockout champ, 1-on-1 champ and 3-on-3 champs.

For the hot shot champs grades 6-8; Jackson Revier grabbed the win for the boys and Hadyn Rice for the girls. The free throw champ was Tristan Kelly for the boys and Rice made the hoops for the girls. Grades 3-5 hot shot winners were Mason Mickelson for the boys and Sylvia Fairbank for the girls. Free throw champs were Mickelson and Lily Fitchett.

The 3 on 3 6th-8th grade champs, coached by Tessier and LeCoure, were: Revier, Jonathan Toyias, Ava Franck and Audrey Fairbank. For the 3rd-5th grade 3 on 3 champs, coached by Dorscher; Nolan Wilkes, Paisley Helvey, Trevor Fitchett and Ollie Scharfe made the cut.

Sporting a new camp t-shirt, the young athletes asked coach Mickelson why it was only one week!
