Independently owned since 1905
In 1984, dozens of the most popular artists got together and recorded "Do they kow it's Christmas" in an effort to raise money for famine victims in Ethiopia. They had a catchy tune and raised more than $24 million. Red Nose Day, Comic Relief's effort to end child poverty, has raised more than $41 million this year.
These are just some examples of causes on a larger scale that raise incredible amounts of money to make an impact. However, giving doesn't have to be millions of dollars. In small communities like those in Sanders County, every little bit makes a big difference. Every hour spent volunteering for an organization, every penny donated and every mention of a non-profit to someone around you helps here at home.
Each year, The Ledger publishes a Local Giving page listing organizations in Sanders County. This week's paper features that comprehensive list on page 7. Looking back each year, it's amazing how many different ways there are to support our communities. Some people may give a lot to a few organizations. Others may give a little to several organizations.
Whatever you can give this holiday season, we encourage you to cut out that list and keep it handy all year long. If you find yourself with a little extra time or money during the year, remember to reach out to these local organizations. They are the ambulance services and senior citizen centers that are there to help, the support that is vital in times of need, and the groups that help local kids thrive.
"It's Christmas time, there's no need to be afraid
At Christmas time, we let in light and we banish shade
And in our world of plenty we can spread a smile of joy
Throw your arms around the world (or Sanders County) at Christmas time."
