The Savage-Horsemen wrestling team brought home plenty of hardware from the Buzz Lucey memorial tournament in Eureka last weekend.
Drew Carey finished a champion on Saturday, pinning Flahead’s Brett Chivers in 1 minute, 54 seconds in the championship match. Carey pinned his way to first place, with none of his matches reaching the third period. Carey first pinned Polson’s Daniel O’Roake in 2:45 before making quick work of Ryle Sheppard of Florence, pinning him in 1:04. Carey won his semifinal match against Brayton Fitch of Flathead in 3:34 before he pinned Chivers to win the bracket.
Johnny Waterbury also pinned his way to a first-place medal at the Buzz Lucey. After a bye in the first round, Waterbury pinned Flathead’s Korbin Baldwin in the second period, and then Tristen DeShazer of Libby just as the second period of that match was ending. In the championship match, Waterbury took down Lucas Kovalsky of Superior.
David Chapman finished second in the 170-pound bracket. Chapman had a bye in the first round, then pinned Eureka’s Tristain Marsh in less than a minute. In the semifinal round, he pinned Libby’s Ian Thom in 4:55. Chapman lost by pin to Florence’s Jett Murray in the championship.
At 126 pounds, Gavin Schrenk beat Ryley Knutson of Polson 8-6 in his first match, then pinned Flathead’s Rook Smith in the first period. In the semifinal round, Schrenk pinned Flathead’s Davin Naldrett in 4 minutes, 42 seconds, setting up a championship bout against Blake Lancaster of Eureka. Lancaster would pin Schrenk in the first quarter, but the Savage-Horsemen wrestler brought home second place.
At 205, Gabe Rasmussen pinned his first opponent in less than a minute, but then fell to eventual champion Wes Banks of Eureka in the second period. In the consolation bracket, Rasmussen won a 10-8 decision of Flathead’s Conor Leduc for a spot in the final, but lost a 7-2 decision to Florence’s Gabriel Harsell-Miller in the final to finish fourth.
Andrew Waterbury finished the tournament with two losses and one win, missing the podium by one match. Waterbury’s win was a pin in the first quarter of Arlee’s Jaen White Hawk. Beau Crabb also wrestled at 145 pounds, winning two matches in Eureka. After losing his first bout, he won two matches by decision in the consolation bracket.
Also at 126 pounds, Cody West wrestled two matches in the Buzz Lucey, first against eventual champion Lancaster, falling in the third quarter, and then to Brody Smith of Arlee in the consolation round. Brendan Vanderwall wrestled two matches in the Buzz Lucey at 182 pounds but was unable to get a win. Matthew Thurston had just one match at the tournament, losing to Landon Serevaag, losing 8-15.
