LeCoure puts up 36 in Hawk win

THOMPSON FALLS 73, MISSION 42

The Blue Hawk basketball team had a massive 73-42 win in Mission last Thursday, putting up impressive numbers. Junior Bryson LeCoure had an incredible game, getting 36 points for Thompson Falls.

“Everyone knew he could do it, he is very efficient. The only other Blue Hawk to score like this in a single game was KellyKelley McKenzie scored 50 versus. Troy in 1991. Bryson was well on his way. He might have gotten there if it was a tighter game in the fourth quarter,” Coach Jake Mickelson beamed at his team.

Thompson came out on fire against Mission, with LeCoure sinking a massive three-pointer to start the game. The Bulldogs tried to answer back, but found themselves on the free throw line. Now they were only down by one point. Breaking past the full court pressure, the Hawks were able to find the basket again to get a swift layup. The teams would go back and forth, but Mission couldn’t gain the lead before the end of the first quarter. Going into the second, LeCoure would get the first points from a foul, sinking his free throws. Mission was unable to answer back. The teams would go point for point, but the Bulldogs were unable to take the lead from the soaring Blue Hawks.

The Blue Hawks came out from the half keeping their fire, getting the first points. They would get more points before the Bulldogs were able to answer back. LcCoure would help his team by sinking another three to put the point gap larger between the two teams. Going into the final quarter the Hawks had a massive lead, and they would be able to keep Mission to minimal scoring. The Bulldogs would answer back keeping the Hawks also to minimal scoring, but they were unable to close the gap and ultimately the Blue Hawks would take the road win.

Nick Tessier was behind LeCoure, getting himself a double-double of 13 points, and 11 massive rebounds. Kaiden Robins also proved to be a powerhouse at the net, pulling down seven rebounds for the Hawks.

MISSION 54, THOMPSON FALLS 38

The Lady Hawks took to the road, first facing the Mission Lady Bulldogs and falling 54-38.

While the young Thompson team was able to come out of the gates and sink a three to get the first points on the board, it was quickly answered with a swift Lady Bulldog layup. The powerhouse teams would go back and forth, before a Mission three-pointer would put them ahead for the first time. A Lady Bulldog foul would put the Lady Hawks on the line, tying up the game with only 27 seconds left in the first quarter. Gabi Hannum was able to gain the basket and a foul putting the Thompson team ahead before the second quarter, but it was answered with a Lady Bulldog layup.

Going into the second the teams would go head to head, but a Mission foul would once again put the Lady Hawks on the free throw line, to take the lead in the second. Thompson would keep intense pressure on the Lady Bulldogs to keep their lead, but Mission was able to break past, putting down easy layups to take the lead. And with only seconds left in the second quarter, the young Thompson team was able to tie up the score before the half.

With the score 21-21 it was anyone’s second half. The Lady Hawks came out to get the first points taking the lead but were quickly answered by a Mission basket. A Lady Bulldog foul would put Thompson on the free throw line, sinking both and keeping their lead. But Mission was only down by one. They were able to get a rebound and sink a layup to take the lead. Both teams would go back and forth until the Lady Bulldogs were able to break down the intense defense and take the lead. Headed into the final quarter the young Lady Hawks wanted to make a comeback but were unable to take the lead. The Mission Lady Bulldogs kept their aggressive defense and were able to keep Thompson to minimal scoring to take the win.

THOMPSON FALLS 56, EUREKA 50

The Hawks were on the road again on Saturday, traveling to Eureka. The Lady Hawks came home with a 56-50 win over the Lions.

The game started close and never faltered as the Lady Hawks were able to score the first points. The Lady Lions were able to tie up the game by answering with a layup of their own. The young Thompson team kept the momentum, gaining another basket. The Lady Hawks would gain three more baskets before Eureka was able to answer with a three pointer. With seconds left Thompson held onto the lead, and was able to keep it going into the second. They would shut out the Lions defense to keep a strong lead. With only two minutes left the Lions had broken past the tight knit Lady Hawk defense to close the score gap to only seven points. Thompson was able to keep Eureka scoreless for the last minutes of the quarter.

Headed back from the half the Lions came out of their cage roaring, getting the first points and keeping the Lady Hawks scoreless for the start. But Thompson was able to keep their lead, keeping the Lady Lions to only nine points for the third quarter. The Lady Lions wouldn’t back down easily, making the Lady Hawks work their aggressive defense. But they were unable to take the lead and the young Lady Hawks left with another win under their belts.

EUREKA 61,

THOMPSON FALLS 43

The Blue Hawk boys fell to the Lions 61-43.

Quickly the Blue Hawks took the lead early in the first, but were swiftly answered back by the Lions. The teams would go back and forth for most of the first quarter. With a minute left Thompson held a four point lead over Eureka. The Blue Hawks would keep that lead going into the second quarter. For most of the second quarter the teams would go points for points, keeping the score gap to no more than two points. With minutes left, the Hawks were able to get a larger lead over the Lions. But with seconds left, the Lions were able to get a swift sneaky layup to close the point gap to only one.

Once again the Blue Hawks came out soaring, getting the first basket of the second half. They would get another layup before Eureka was able to get their own points on the board. Within minutes the Lions had a point lead, but would find themselves tied up again a minute later. The Lions would take the lead in the third. With only two minutes left, the Hawks were unable to take the lead before the final quarter. The final quarter would start with Eureka having a 41-35 lead. The Lions were able to find holes in Thompson’s tight knit defense to keep their lead. They would also keep the Blue Hawks to minimal scoring to take the win.

“We played well in the first half. I wish we could have taken a bigger lead and maybe this could have been our game. The boys are excited for the rematch at home this weekend,” Mickleson said of his team.

It was no surprise that LeCoure led with 18 points, Tessier behind him with six, and Braedon Ferris rounded it out with five. LeCoure and Braxton Dorscher held the top spot for rebounds, each getting seven for Thompson.

The Hawks will host county rivals Plains on Thursday, February 1, then welcome Eureka for a rematch on Saturday.
