P-HS wrestling takes three championships at Mission Valley

The Savage-Horsemen wrestlers took to the Mission Valley Championships, with three wrestlers taking first place, two taking second place, and four wrestlers finishing in third.

Beau Crabb was the first Savage-Horsemen to take the podium in the 138-pound weight class. He won his first two matches by pin, and went on to the finals to pin Cory Tappen of Flathead.

John Waterbury was the second wrestler to get first place, first having a bye. He went on to pin his next opponent to place in the semifinals. Waterbury went on to win by a 12-8 decision over Koda King of Ronan. Waterbury would also take first place by a decision over Superior’s Lucas Kovalsky.

David Chapman also placed first for the Plains-Hot Springs team, getting a bye in his first round. Chapman went on to win by pin, placing him in the finals, where he pinned teammate Brenden Vanderwall. Vanderwall had pinned his first two opponents to reach the championship against Chapman.

Cody West in the 132-pound weight class finished second, winning his first two matchups by pin. West went on to get the decision over teammate Andrew Waterbury in the semifinals. West would go on to lose by pin in the finals to take second place. Also at 132 pounds, Savage-Horseman Gavin Schrenk pinned his first opponent before losing in the second round. Schrenk would win his first two consolation rounds, but was injured in the finals and finished fourth.

Matthew Thurston in the 113-pound weight class took third place, first having a bye. He went on to be pinned by Dawson Hamland of Flathead. In the consolation semifinals he received a bye, and in the finals he pinned Tristen Cheff of Flathead.

John Thurston of the 120-pound weight class had a bye in the first round, going on to be pinned in his second matchup. He received another bye for the consolation semifinals, and would win by pin over Rook Smith of Flathead.

At 182 pounds, Gabe Rasmussen took third, first winning by decision over Jeryn Belcourt of Arlee. He then went on to be pinned in the semifinals. In the consolation bracket, Rasmussen would take on Bridger Smith and pin him to head into the finals, where he pinned Belcourt once again.

Will Tatum, at 285 pounds, had a big match, first beating Paul Webb of Manhattan. He went on to be pinned in the semifinals. After receiving a bye in the consolation semifinals, Tatum would pin Webb again, taking third place.

At 160 pounds, Devin Barnes wrestled some tough matches, but was unable to get a win at Mission.

The Savage-Horsemen are gearing up for the divisional tournament this weekend in Shelby, with competition starting Friday.
