Unsure of what to do? Bring food
My favorite show growing up — and still one of my favorites now — was Little House on the Prairie. I love the idea of small communities supporting themselves and each other. When there was a barn raising, everyone showed up for the work and the celebration. When it was time for the harvest, everyone would gather for a large meal after the harvest was done.
Food brings us together. In times of sickness or distress or in times of joy and celebration, there is always a meal to share.
Think about when a family suffers a loss or an illness. People don't ask what to do. They start meal trains or bring casseroles. One time when I was helping a family member recover from a surgery, a friend brought all the fixings for breakfast sandwiches. It was so simple and easy, but it was so thoughtful. When you don't know what to do, you cook.
Sharing a meal or a favorite recipe is such a bonding experience. All of our holidays are centered around food. So are weddings, birthday parties and funerals. I enjoy asking people about their favorite family recipes because it's a great way to get to know a person.
When a recent dear friend passed and we were planning the food, the family asked my mom to make her baked beans. They are a staple at branding day — which is bigger than Christmas for us — and just about every other celebration in our household.
When agreeing to attend meetings or planning sessions, I often joke "will there be snacks?" The truth is, food is a great ice breaker and way to connect with someone.
