Family bonds through travel

We recently enjoyed nine unforgettable days with our son and four grandkids, ages 5 to 17. Watching them experience new things—like catching their first fish, kayaking in the Frog Pond, and exploring the giant cedars—warmed my heart and made me appreciate the value of family time, especially since our six children are scattered across the country. Three of them are active or recently discharged military with tough schedules, and the last time we were all together was 2019. Since then, we've welcomed a new grandchild and two of our daughters were married. Planning a family vacation together now feels like the perfect opportunity to reunite everyone and allow us, our kids and grandkids to enjoy some much-needed bonding time.

Recent studies indicate that approximately 37% of travelers are engaging in multi-generational travel, a trend growing as families seek ways to spend quality time with each other. However, planning such trips requires careful consideration to ensure everyone, from seniors to young children, enjoys the experience. Toddlers need simple activities and a safe environment, children need outlets to run and play, teens want to do their own thing, parents seek some R&R, and grandparents may need a quiet break to recharge.

Here are my top three recommendations for multi-gen vacations:

All-inclusive resorts are an ideal choice for their convenience and amenities. Resorts package accommodations, meals, drinks, activities, childcare, entertainment, and transfers, simplifying vacation planning. There are a wide array of kids activities like water parks, play areas, and sports courts. These properties often feature an entertainment staff that organizes various activities for all ages. Many have adults only areas. Food is typically accessible all day long so everyone can eat and drink to their heart’s content. Evening entertainment featuring vibrant cultural shows and live music is enjoyable for the whole family.

Cruise lines like Norwegian and Royal Caribbean offer resort-style vacations with diverse dining options, captivating entertainment, and activities for all ages. Kids can enjoy experiences like go-kart tracks, laser tag, sports courts and water parks, while adults indulge in Broadway shows, live music, spa treatments, and casinos. With accommodations ranging from comfortable staterooms to luxurious suites, cruises allow you to unpack once and explore multiple destinations worldwide.

Walt Disney World provides flexibility for families to explore at their own pace across its 25 unique resorts and four theme parks—Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Disney's Hollywood Studios, and Disney's Animal Kingdom. Disney also offers golf courses, water parks, shopping, spas, and fitness centers. They make it easy with their dining plans, park hopper tickets and convenient transportation options connecting all attractions. Fun seasonal events such as Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival, and holiday celebrations can enhance your experience.

Planning ahead is essential for family travel, allowing for scheduling time off and utilizing flexible payment plans. Consulting with a travel advisor early not only saves time and reduces stress but also ensures your destination aligns perfectly with your family's vibe and vacation goals.
