Living in rural areas often means facing isolation, a challenge disproportionately affecting senior residents. Maintaining an active lifestyle is crucial for health and fulfillment and is particularly vital for our senior community.
This is why Whitepine Grange is making a significant difference. Local seniors are finding renewed energy and connection through Joy of Movement fitness classes. Supported by the Rural Life Initiative of the National Grange and Pfizer, these free classes are led by 71-year-old Jan Manning and professional instructors, whose lively spirit and dedication inspire participants to stay active and healthy.
Since launching in September 2024, the classes have received an enthusiastic response from the community. Now the classes are attended by up to 18 participants weekly. “Our goal is to get people together to enjoy the fun of exercise and movement at each person’s own pace. They are now discovering the immense improvement this makes to their quality of life,” says Manning.
These classes at Whitepine Grange blend light cardio, weight training, balance exercises, and games, creating a fun and welcoming space for people of all ages and abilities to connect through movement. “I wear a special t-shirt to class that says ‘Movement is the Best Medicine.’” Manning is living proof, having fully recovered from multiple joint replacements.
With a vision to reach more residents, Whitepine Grange plans to expand its offerings to include a tumbling class for children at the local school and sessions tailored for disabled individuals. The goal is to improve lives regardless of age, fitness level, disability, or financial means.
. “We simply want every senior to know about this opportunity. There isn't much to do in our area, and we believe this initiative will help our seniors to live fulfilling lives,” Manning said. The Whitepine Grange welcomes any support to spread the word and ensure these classes are accessible to all.
