Noxon hosted the Victor Pirates on Saturday, with the boys dominating the court and almost breaking a school record with their 104-17 win, while the Lady Pirates took the 46-32 win over the Lady Devils.
NOXON 104, VICTOR 17
The Red Devils boys hit the court for a massive win, using their height and putting an intense full court press on the Pirates. Working together like a well oiled machine, the Devils soon had the score 21-4 with over half the quarter left. Never letting up from their relentless full court pressure, Noxon quickly found their groove and never let the Pirates catch their breath.
The Devils would end the quarter a massive 35 points ahead. Victor opened up in the second quarter with a swift three pointer, but it was answered when Justice Kayser found Shane Murray in the paint for a Devil basket. The team lessened their full court press, but the young Pirates were no match for the height of Noxon and the Devils put down three more baskets in a blink of an eye. The Devils' teamwork was solid, with each player knowing exactly where the other was, and soon they had the score 60-8. Victor was able to find the basket twice more before the half.
"Big Shane Murray was a big part of this win tonight. Victor just couldn't get past him," said head coach Trevor Kayser.
Even with a mercy rule running the clock, Noxon was able to read the court and find several steals to quickly put up more points. Murray even stunned the crowd by dunking the ball twice in the third quarter. Victor would only gain one basket for the whole third quarter, while Noxon continued to put up point after point. Going into the final quarter the Devils had a 91-15 lead. Noxon continued their pressure on the Pirates in the fourth quarter, and were quick to put up two easy baskets. Once again the Devils only allowed Victor one basket in the quarter, and with three minutes left, a swift Devil three pointer put the score over 100. One more three pointer put the final score 104-17.
"The guys really wanted to break the 108 school record but it's hard with the running clock. In the end I am still proud of their efforts," coach Kayser stated.
After the new year the Devils hit the road taking on the Alberton Panthers January 3.
VICTOR 46, NOXON 32
The Lady Red Devils hit the court first. Victor would be the first to score and would pull ahead with minutes left in the first quarter.. Heading into the second Victor took off to strengthen their lead and soon had the score 20-10. Noxon was able to break past the Pirate defense and put another basket on the board. Victor would continue to pull ahead before the half, making the young Devils fight for their baskets.
Coming back from the half Noxon was able to gain back-to-back baskets, before the Pirates answered with a swift three-pointer and continued their lead In the final quarter the Devils found their groove and were able to capitalize off several steals to earn swift layups. The young Noxon team banded together for fast breaks ending in more layups, but Victor had enough of a lead to take the 46-32 win.
"The girls came back from a pretty good point deficit, they never gave up and I'm proud of them for that," said coach Cory Brodmerkle. "During the break we are going to work on shooting, and fouling less."
